Claudio Fasoli is a jazz composer, saxophone player, educator.
First professional experiences:
Born in Venice, he now lives in Milan, Italy. After a long apprenticeship and many sessions with
various prominent musicians, he achieved popularity in the ’70 playing with “Perigeo Quintet”
amongst whose other artists were Giovanni Tommaso as its leader, Franco D’Andrea, Bruno Biriaco
and Anthony Sidney. The group performed a never-ending number of live - concerts throughout
Italy, Europe and also overseas, and with it Fasoli gained a considerable experience both as soloist
and composer. The Perigeo recorded for RCA many albums still much appreciated by collectors.
After Perigeo, small beginnings, great musicians:
In 1978, Perigeo disbanded and Fasoli became leader of his own group adopting definitely a more
acoustic way to express himself. He put together mostly trios and quartets defining a further
characterized compositional concept definitely close to a “modal complex” approach. Some of
the great names in the Italian, European and International jazz scene have played in these groups.
Since the 80’s, were involved in his combos names in the likes of Mick Goodrick, Palle Danielsson,
Tony Oxley (“Bodies”) Lee Konitz (“Infant Eyes”), Kenny Wheeler, Bill Elgart, Henri Texier, (“Ten
Tributes”), Drew Gress, Ralph Alessi, Nasheet Waits (“The Brooklyn Option”), Justin Brown, Matt
Mitchell (“Selfie”) etc. performing not only in Italy, but even in France, Switzerland, Germany, Finland,
Cuba, USA, UK, Canada, etc.
Further Collaborations:
He was invited to perform in the first performances of the “Grande Orchestra Nazionale” in Italy and
in the “Lydian Sound Orchestra”. He has also participated with and conducted the European Music
Orchestra in live and studio performances, and has played within the Manfred Schoof International
Band. He contributed also to the Giorgio Gaslini Quintet and to other bands.
Identity:
Fasoli adapts well to various musical settings and has developed his own solo style and a distinct,
always-developing sound and compositional approach. Acclaimed even abroad, he continues to
work with the best Italian and foreign musicians. He happened to collaborate with the great Italian
classical cello player, Mario Brunello and the Swedish pianist, Bobo Stenson.
The Educator:
Since the Siena International Jazz Clinics was founded in 1978, Fasoli has been responsible for the
classes in Tenor & Soprano saxophone and the master class in Improvisation. He founded the
saxophone Courses at the City of Milan Jazz School under the direction of Enrico Intra and has
taught Jazz at National Conservatories.
He conducts Clinics throughout Italy and abroad. He has been artistic Director of the Padua Jazz
Festival (2003-2010).
